We do a deep dive on this topic in our blog post Antiperspirant and Deodorant: What's Actually the Difference? Sweat Facts | Life at the Helmm. But, if you want the cliff-notes, see below.
Our Sport Deodorant formula is naturally-derived, aluminum-free, and dermatologist approved like the Natural Deodorant, but the Sport Deodorant has different ingredients than the Natural Deodorant. Its ingredients are naturally derived and it provides powerful odor protection during active chapters in your day. Both the Sport Deodorant and Natural Deodorant are solid, stick products. And both formulas are Aluminum-Free, Paraben-Free, Phthalate-Free, Triclosan-Free, Talc-Free, Baking Soda-Free and Sulfate-Free. If you need some help choosing between Deodorants, see the comparison below.
Sport Deodorant: We refer to all Non-Natural Deodorants simply as Sport Deodorants. These products typically contains at least one safe, but non-natural ingredient (compared to Natural Deodorants) and is Aluminum-Free (compared to Antiperspirants). While Antiperspirant & Deodorant reduces sweat and masks body odor, Deodorant simply masks body odor through a variety of bacteria-inhibiting ingredients and strong fragrance. While not nearly as effective as its Antiperspirant counterpart, Deodorant holds up much better than Natural Deodorant.
I should use Deodorant if…
- Visible sweat or stains are not a concern, but I am prone to body odor
- I care deeply about avoiding aluminum products
- My body odor does not exactly smell like roses
- I don’t mind being sweaty, it’s just the body odor that bothers me
- I get irritation from Antiperspirants
Natural Deodorants: Natural deodorants are all the rage these days, but what does that really mean, exactly? Well, first off, the term “Natural” is unregulated by any government industry, so we recommend being extremely wary about checking ingredient lists yourself to see how your product is truly being made. (For example, you might see some products refer to themselves as “All-Natural Antiperspirant” – that is impossible!). Like Deodorants, Natural products attempts to ward off body odor simply by covering it up with fragrance & using only natural ingredients. Many contain baking soda, or other plant-based ingredients, many of which can be common skin irritants, so choose wisely!
I should use Natural Deodorant if…
- I don’t mind being sweaty or having some body odor
- Organic & vegan products matter deeply to me
- I usually only have to apply deodorant occasionally, if at all
- I enjoy making deodorant and other deodorizing products myself
- My body odor does not smell
